The message and your network card not working are not related.

Is your laptop an SMP machine?
What kind of network card is it?  Brand and form factor (PCMCIA etc.)

You probably need to ask about it on a different mailing list,
such as linux-pcmcia (if it's a PCMCIA or CardBus card).

lspci output + complete dmesg could be helpful with your next
report.
