We still have customers using ruby 1.8 at Engine Yard. A lot has
migrated to ruby 1.9 and 2.0 but not everyone.

Thanks for the quick fix. It works for me.

ip-10-90-61-103 ~ # gem install --pre -v kgio
Fetching: kgio- (100%)
Building native extensions.  This could take a while...
Successfully installed kgio-
